Noam's Two Month Update

Well here we are. Two months (yesterday), 9 weeks (today) since our little Noam entered this world outside of the womb. Time really does move at a strange pace when you have a newborn. I find myself simultaneously confused by how quickly the weeks fly by (didn't I just take his weekly photo like, yesterday?) and somewhat frustrated by how slowly the minutes seem to pass during his fussy evenings (is it 9pm yet?). But I wouldn't trade any of it - the midnight wakings, morning smiles, sleepy afternoons, fussy evenings - for the world.

So with that, here's an update on how Noam's doing at 2 months.

Basic Stats

Noam continues to pack on the pounds and currently weighs 13 lbs. 2 oz. and is 24" long. 2 feet at 2 months, how fitting! He's wearing mostly 0-3 months clothing still but we had to size up to 3-6 month pajamas, and I think he'll be in mostly 3-6 month clothes in the next week or two. Time to pack away the newborn and 0-3 month stuff. Cue the tears. He's still in size 1 diapers but will be needing size 2 very soon. Cue the Target run. He also received his first round of vaccines a few weeks ago at his 2-month well check-up (that I scheduled a few weeks early). Cue more, regular, non-paranoid outings!

Noam still loves to eat (look at that weight gain!) and usually will until his eyes roll into the back of his head and he passes out, boob in mouth, grin on face. I'm exclusively breastfeeding, but we have introduced the bottle (we're using the Kiinde system) so that Noam would take it in the event that he needs to use it. He's still eating about every 3-4 hours. Breastfeeding has had lots of ups and downs, but I'm really lucky to have a father-in-law who is a pro-breastfeeding pediatrician and his co-workers who provide incredible lactation support. I absolutely love breastfeeding and hope to do so as long as possible. (Fun fact: I was breastfed until I was 4. Thanks/sorry, Mom!). His meals are our time to really bond; I love the way he giggles a little right before he begins to eat (like as soon as I pull out the boob - I'm not sure whether it's a compliment or an insult, but I'll take it because it's really cute) and hugs me so tightly with his whole body as he eats that he leaves an imprint of his hands on my chest.

Still kind of all over the place here. He recently had a record 7 hour stretch at night, but then had a few nights of waking every 2-3 hours. While I hope for his sake and mine that he continues to have more nights like the former, the nights like the latter are not nearly as challenging as they were last month, mostly because I now am getting more sleep on average and am not chronically sleep deprived anymore. I'm currently reading 12 Hours' Sleep by 12 Weeks Old, and I'm hoping that I can follow the program well enough that it works. I've also started to stay in bed for his middle of the night meals (sorry, Jason), which has helped us both fall asleep more quickly afterward and get more total sleep.

Activity and Development

This past month has been so much fun watching Noam change and discover new things daily. He's become even more active - constantly moving and wiggling and lifting and holding his head up almost all the time at this point - and very strong, using my legs, stomach and chest as his personal launch pad daily.

He's also even more vocal and now 'talks' to us all the time. Jason and I are battling it out for his first word already, but I think Jason's at an advantage. His sounds are so entertaining now - he's developed a veritable vocabulary of 'words' that extend far beyond coos - and we love to converse with him to see what he says and how he reacts.

Noam's still happiest in the mornings, though his happy times are beginning to extend into the afternoons. He loves to smile during these times and it makes my heart melt because he looks like the happiest boy in the world. He still gets fussy in the evenings - though not every evening - and seems to get fussy when he's bored (a preview of things to come). Yesterday, I calmed him down by singing 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA, so there's that.

One of the most rewarding developments this month has been Noam's recognition of us. He's begun to smile at Jason when he comes home from work or at me when I enter the room he's in. His eyes will follow us around the room and he'll become noticeably more excited as we get closer to him.

Finally, Noam's begun to discover his hands more. He loves to suck his whole fist (he strangely prefers his left) and will briefly use his hands to grasp toys I place near him. I think he's in the beginning stages of teething because he's drooling a ton, constantly sucking his fist or arm and occasionally pulling our hands near his mouth to suck.

Noam's a highly active, excitable, happy (we're beginning to see signs of giggling and full on laughing) baby who loves to be entertained by new things. He likes his routine (he's fairly predictable) and the things we've found that have worked for him (he loves sitting in the bathroom as I shower because he enjoys the sound of running water) but also loves a change of scenery once in a while (his favorite is looking out the window). He's sensitive (like his parents) and sweet, but he'll make it known if he's not thrilled with what's happening around him. Noam often has this inquisitive look on his face, so I think he's going to prove to be curious as he gets older. He loves to stare at the dogs, so I'm calling it right now: he's an animal lover.
